North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment

North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment

Adornment - jewellery, beadwork and ceremonial regalia - is a defining element of cultural expression for North American Indians. This study is based on a decade of research and interviews with elders and artists, excerpts from which are presented in the book, and extends in scope from the Arctic Circle to northern Mexico, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Thousands of distinctive objects are reproduced, among them Southwestern turquoise jewellery, Plains beadwork, "carved" metal bracelets from the Northwest, quill and moose-hair work from the Subarctic, etched horn jewellery from northern California, and engraved mussel-shell gorgets from Oklahoma and the Southeast. Also included are regional maps, and diagrams of jewellery techniques.

diamond worker

diamond worker

Only in india could a trip to the jewellers to get a diamond ring reset be so interesting.

L wanted to get a ring reset so off we went to a plush looking jewellery shop. After the usual sales pitch, browsing etc they agreed to do the work as well as clean a couple of other items of jewellery. However our suspicions were raised when the store owner kept speaking in the local language (Telegu) and pointing to the ring in question to his co-workers. Fearful of getting the diamond switched for a fake we asked to be present when the stone was removed and reset.

Two hours later we were escorted to the store's workshop in the heart of Charminar (the old town), tucked away inside the most inconspicuous little shack.

Inside we were amazed to find that all of the stock in the shop was being produced by a team of about 5 young boys, the youngest of which couldn't have been older than 14.

Although quite shocked to find such young kids working like this they were clearly well looked after. The skill and craftsmanship these young men had learnt were probably beyond the wildest dreams of many their age.

The young man above was by far the oldest of the workers and as you can see was being eagerly watched by the boss.

Lady of Lourdes cathedral - Thrissur

Lady of Lourdes cathedral - Thrissur

Thrissur is the best place in India to see Christmas decorations, thanks to it's high number of wealthy Christians.
Most of the donations for the decorations come from gold jewellers and the merchant community.

This picture was taken on New year's eve. A large crowd of people had gathered there to listen to the bands playing on the porch. A few people caught up in the festive mood, were dancing. They pulled me in when I had wandered too close to take a picture. Only after 10 minutes of vigorous & bad dancing was I allowed to leave.
